Three routes to reach the canton from different regions of Costa Rica.

Route 1 — The most popular

From San José

San José → Alajuela → Fraijanes → Poás Volcano

Take the General Cañas Highway to Alajuela. At the La Joya intersection, follow the road toward Fraijanes. Continue up the mountain following signs to the National Park.

Route 2 — Through the canton seat

From Alajuela

Alajuela → San Pedro de Poás → Fraijanes → Poás Volcano

Depart from central Alajuela heading north on the route to San Pedro de Poás. Continue through Fraijanes toward the National Park entrance.

Route 3 — From Varablanca / Sarapiquí

From the Caribbean

Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí → Varablanca → Poás Volcano

What to know before visiting.

Temperature

Between 7 °C and 18 °C at the volcano. Bring warm clothing even during the dry season.

Weather

Best to visit before 10 a.m. Clouds usually increase in the afternoon and can block the crater view.

Parking

Parking is available inside the park. Arrive early in high season to secure a space.

Reservations

You must reserve online with SINAC before visiting the volcano. Entry is not allowed without a reservation.
